Sodium Hydroxide, also known as Caustic Soda in Pearls for making Homemade Soap, is a caustic hydroxide used in industry, mainly as a chemical base, in the manufacture of paper, fabrics, detergents, food and biodiesel. It is a strong base.
It is occasionally used in domestic use to unclog pipes, as it dissolves fats and sebum. It is highly corrosive and can cause burns, scars and blindness due to its high reactivity.
It reacts exothermically with water and is produced by electrolysis of an aqueous solution of sodium chloride (brine).
