History of São Sebastião
São Sebastião was born in Narbonne, France, in 256 AD, but lived most of his life in Italy. It is believed that he enlisted in the Roman army with the mission of helping Christians who were being persecuted and mistreated by the Romans. When Emperor Diocletian discovered that Saint Sebastian was a Christian, he was ordered to be tied to a post and to be killed with arrows. São Sebastião was found alive by Irene, a devout Christian, who took care of her injuries. São Sebastião again confronted Diocletian for the barbaric deaths of the Christians, but this time he did not escape with his life. Every year, on January 20, homage is paid to São Sebastião.
